He has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

1 Peter 1:3

Hope for the Hopeless

The human heart is steeped in self-deception. This sickness has permeated our hearts to the extent that we don’t even recognize it. The essence of self-deception is that we don’t know that we don’t know! The cure is truth, and the procedure can be rough, but Jesus is not shocked by what He finds in us when He arrives by His Spirit.

“But Peter said to Him, ‘Even though all may fall away, yet I will not’” (Mk. 14:29). Later, Peter went out and did the very thing he said he never would. When Peter denied Him the third time, it was not Christ who cried, it was Peter. Jesus wasn’t disappointed that Peter lied; He was disappointed that Peter tried.

What we think is Christ’s disappointment with us is really our disappointment with ourselves! At the root of self-condemnation is our self-righteousness; and the fact that we are disappointed with ourselves is proof that we have been trusting in ourselves in the first place. Our pride pouts. As Viktor Frankl said, “Any organ which is aware of itself is sick.”

Praise God, He had not written the last chapter on Peter’s life, nor has He written the last chapter on ours. Augustine put it well when he said, “There is no saint without a past, no sinner without a future.”

"There is no saint
without a past, no sinner
without a future."

- Saint Augustine

Christ glorified Himself in Peter at the very place he failed so miserably. “Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them...” (Acts 2:14). One cringes at the thought of Peter opening his mouth to declare Christ, but he did, and 3,000 souls were saved that day!

Ultimately, Peter was freed by the truth; the truth about himself and the truth about Christ who indwelt him. “Men of Israel, why are you amazed at this, or why do you gaze at us, as if by our own power or piety we had made him walk? The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the God of our fathers, has glorified His servant Jesus...” (Acts 3:12-13). Peter cherished no hope in himself; Christ was his hope and life.

A Christian lives at one and the same time with a sense of his own desperation and unspeakable joy as he learns to reckon with Christ's indwelling Life. Paul became the Apostle of Faith; John became the Apostle of Love; Peter became the Apostle of Hope. Jesus made each one into a person they could never have been on their own. In fact, He made them into the very opposite of what they were naturally.

Peter’s message to the church is one of hope, “...according to His great mercy (He) has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead” (1Pet. 1:3).

For His sake,

Peter Reid
General Director

Peter attended Bodenseehof, the Torchbearers Bible school in Germany. This was the turning point in his life when he first learned that Jesus Christ who died for him also lived in him. In April 2014, Peter took over as Director of Bodenseehof and was elected to serve on the Executive Council of Torchbearers International. Peter travels over 100 days a year engaging in itinerant preaching/teaching ministry. In 2017, he took over as the General Director of Torchbearers International.

Support Torchbearers Philippines

Our Torchbearers ministry in the Philippines serves students and teachers in the local schools. What's exciting is through tutoring programs and 'values' classes, the team is able to not only help students in their studies, but also share Christ and make disciples. Unlike other centers, Torchbearers Philippines doesn't have guests or Bible school programs and depends totally on donations to operate. You can read testimonies of Filipino students whose lives were changed by Jesus and learn more about what Torchbearers Philippines is doing in their newsletter. Please pray for our center in the Philippines, and if you would like to financially give to support their ministry, you can at the link below:

Angaza Bible School

Students learn from Western and African Bible teachers, experience fellowship with other Christians from different countries and cultures and go on outreach into the local communities together. Angaza runs at the beginning of the summer each year. You can learn more about it here »
