A word from our new General Director

Dear Friends,

In 2007, Mark Thomas, then Director of Capernwray Hall in England, asked me to write a tribute to his father, Major W. Ian Thomas, who had just passed away. This is what I wrote:

“…I met Major Thomas the first time as an 18 year-old Bible school student at Bodenseehof (Germany) in 1979 when he came for a week of lectures at the end of fall term. Both Major and Mrs. Thomas came that year and I was very impressed with their reverent, yet warm, demeanor among the students. I was standing in the snack bar one evening when Major Thomas came bounding in, walked straight up to me and gave me a firm handshake, added by a friendly, “Hello!”. It took me aback at the time that a man of his age and stature would genuinely want to even speak with me. (He was only 64 at the time, which doesn’t seem that old to me anymore!) I had no clue what the Major was speaking about that week in lectures, but in the kindness of God the Spirit Himself made it clear to me that whatever he was speaking about, it was the truth; and He made me hungry for more.

During the next 5 years I learned the language of the message God had entrusted to Major, “Christ in you, the hope of glory”. But that was not enough. It is possible to have the language without the life; I was very frustrated. It was in his guest room on an evening in 1985, in St. Paul, Minnesota, that I exposed my desperation to Major Thomas. It was after a short prayer together that I discovered the truth of what I had heard in Bible School years before; I merely began thanking Jesus that He lived in me and holding Him responsible for what He said. What a discovery that was! It’s been a discovery I’ve been learning and re-learning ever since.

The reality of Christ’s indwelling Life has been the one thing in my Christian life that has made Christianity a bright reality. It is His Life alone that has proven sufficient to save me from all I am, and ever will be, apart from Him. Christ alone is the reason for any blessing I have enjoyed in my life and ministry to this day. I’m so very thankful for Major Thomas, but I’m even more thankful that he left me with Jesus, who is my Life.”

The sufficiency of Christ’s indwelling, resurrection life in the Christian continues to be the heartbeat of Torchbearers. This is not the Torchbearers message, it is simply the truth of Scripture and a message which is aching to be heard today. Our desire is to serve all who come to any one of our 25 centres for Christ’s sake, as He is allowed to be the source, means and goal of the Christian life.

Gaby and I want to thank Chris and Bonnie Thomas for their loyalty to the Lord and Torchbearers over many years, and whom we also consider personal friends. We covet your prayers as we learn the ins and outs of our responsibilities. We are humbled to find ourselves in this position, and bank our lives on the truth that Christ is sufficient for all He expects from us. Thank you for taking the time to explore our website and we look forward to hosting you at one of our centres around the world.
Warmly in Christ,

Peter and Gaby Reid
